Welcome to Pismo Beach

Pismo Beach has the kind of coastal setting that makes you want to slow down. You can start the morning with a walk along the beach, grab breakfast near downtown, head out to explore the coastline and finish the day watching the sun disappear over the Pacific.

And that's part of what makes Pismo such a great fit for the 805. It doesn't require a complicated itinerary. Some of the best experiences are simply walking the waterfront, enjoying the ocean air, exploring a local park or finding a place to watch the sunset.

Pismo Beach is also a convenient jumping-off point for exploring more of San Luis Obispo County, including nearby Grover Beach, Oceano, Arroyo Grande, Avila Beach and San Luis Obispo.

Where Is Pismo Beach?

Pismo Beach is located on California's Central Coast in San Luis Obispo County. The city sits along the Pacific Ocean between Grover Beach and Shell Beach, with Arroyo Grande just inland.

For 805 travelers, Pismo's location is one of its biggest advantages. Highway 101 provides a direct route through the Central Coast, while Highway 1 connects Pismo Beach with other coastal communities.

That makes Pismo an easy destination to add to an 805 road trip. You can visit for the day or use the city as a home base while exploring the surrounding Central Coast.

Things to Do in Pismo Beach

There is no shortage of things to do in Pismo Beach, but you don't have to pack your schedule to enjoy it. The beach, pier, parks and downtown area are close enough that you can build a relaxed day around several of the city's most popular attractions.

Walk the Pismo Beach Pier

The Pismo Beach Pier is one of those places you'll want to see even if you're only passing through town. The approximately 1,200-foot pier extends into the Pacific and provides wide-open views of the coastline and ocean.

Take a walk, watch the surfers, look for marine life or simply enjoy the view. The pier is especially popular around sunset, when the waterfront becomes one of the best places in town to take in the evening sky.

The Pismo Beach Promenade runs along the waterfront near the pier, making it easy to continue your walk after visiting the beach.

Enjoy Pismo Beach

Sometimes the best thing to do in Pismo Beach is nothing at all.

Grab a towel, find a spot on the sand and enjoy the Pacific. The beach is the centerpiece of the community and a big reason people return to Pismo year after year.

If you're visiting with kids, building sandcastles and playing on the beach can easily fill an afternoon. If you're visiting as a couple, a long walk along the shoreline followed by dinner downtown makes for an easy Central Coast evening.

Visit the Pismo State Beach Monarch Butterfly Grove

One of Pismo Beach's most interesting natural attractions isn't something you'll find at every California beach town. Each winter, thousands of western monarch butterflies may gather in the eucalyptus trees at the Pismo State Beach Monarch Butterfly Grove.

The grove's official season runs from November through February, although butterfly numbers naturally vary from year to year.

If you're visiting Pismo during the winter, it's worth adding the grove to your itinerary. It's a different side of the Central Coast and a great reminder that the 805's natural attractions go well beyond its beaches.

Explore Dinosaur Caves Park

Dinosaur Caves Park is one of our favorite examples of the variety you'll find along the Pismo coastline. Located on a bluff overlooking the Pacific, the 11-acre park offers ocean views, walking areas, grassy spaces, an amphitheater and a large playground.

It's a particularly good stop if you're traveling with children. Kids can burn off some energy at the playground while adults enjoy the coastal views.

The park also has an interesting connection to Pismo's past. Its name comes from a large concrete dinosaur that was once part of a nearby attraction. The original attraction is gone, but the dinosaur connection remains part of the area's history.

Stop at Margo Dodd Park

Head toward Shell Beach and you'll find another beautiful stretch of the Pismo coastline at Margo Dodd Park.

The blufftop park offers views of the Pacific, open grassy areas and a gazebo. It's a good place to slow down, take photos or simply sit and watch the waves.

Nearby beach access also provides an opportunity to explore tide pools during suitable low tides. If you're checking out the tide pools, take your time and watch your footing on the rocks.

Explore the Pismo Coastline

One of the things we love about Pismo Beach is that you don't have to stay in one spot. The coastline offers plenty of opportunities to explore beyond the main beach and pier.

Walk the blufftops around Shell Beach, visit one of the oceanfront parks or take a coastal stroll and see where the day takes you.

If you're putting together a list of things to do in Pismo Beach, don't overlook the simple experiences. Some of the best views along the coast don't require an admission ticket or a complicated plan.

Pismo Beach for Families

Pismo Beach is an easy destination for a family day trip from around the 805. The beach provides plenty of room to play, while the pier, promenade and Dinosaur Caves Park give families alternatives when everyone needs a break from the sand.

Dinosaur Caves Park is particularly popular with families because of its playground and open spaces. The Monarch Butterfly Grove can also be a fun educational stop during the winter season.

For families staying overnight, having the beach, restaurants and attractions close by makes it possible to spend less time in the car and more time enjoying the coast.

Pismo Beach for Couples

Looking for an easy Central Coast getaway for two? Pismo Beach fits the bill.

Start with coffee and a walk along the beach, spend the afternoon exploring Shell Beach and the coastal parks, then find a restaurant downtown before heading back toward the waterfront for sunset.

You don't need a packed itinerary. Pismo is one of those 805 destinations where simply being near the ocean is part of the experience.

Where to Eat in Pismo Beach

When it's time to eat, Pismo Beach has plenty of choices around downtown, Price Street and the waterfront.

Of course, seafood is an obvious choice when you're visiting a Central Coast beach town. You'll also find restaurants serving burgers, Italian food, breakfast, coffee, ice cream and other casual favorites.

One of the easiest ways to experience Pismo is to make food part of the day rather than treating it as a separate stop. Grab breakfast before heading to the beach, have lunch while exploring downtown and settle in for dinner after watching the sunset.

Restaurant hours and menus change, so check with individual restaurants before making specific plans.

Where to Stay in Pismo Beach

Pismo Beach has accommodations for everything from a quick overnight stop to a longer Central Coast vacation.

Staying near downtown puts you close to the pier, beach, restaurants and waterfront promenade. The Shell Beach area offers another option for visitors who want to be close to the coast while exploring a quieter part of Pismo Beach.

For a more outdoors-focused trip, camping at Pismo State Beach provides another way to experience the area. California State Parks operates campgrounds in the Pismo Beach area, although reservations and availability can vary by season.

Best Time to Visit Pismo Beach

There really isn't a bad time to visit Pismo Beach. The best time depends on what you want to experience.

Summer is a popular choice for a traditional California beach vacation, while spring and fall can be great times to explore the coastline without making the entire trip about spending the day on the sand.

Winter has its own appeal because it's monarch butterfly season at the Pismo State Beach Monarch Butterfly Grove, which generally runs from November through February.

One thing we always recommend for a Central Coast visit: bring layers. Even when it's warm inland, temperatures along the coast can be noticeably cooler, especially in the morning and evening.

Camping Near Pismo Beach

If you'd rather wake up near the ocean than check into a hotel, camping is another option around Pismo Beach.

Pismo State Beach includes North Beach Campground and Oceano Campground. Camping is popular, particularly during weekends and peak travel periods, so planning ahead is important.

Before heading out, check the latest California State Parks information for campground availability, reservations, rules and current conditions.

Day Trips From Pismo Beach

One of the best things about Pismo Beach is its location. Once you've explored the city, you have an entire section of the Central Coast within easy reach.

Arroyo Grande and Grover Beach are right next door, while Avila Beach offers another popular coastal destination nearby. San Luis Obispo provides a different experience with its downtown, restaurants, shops and historic character.

Head north and you can explore Morro Bay and additional San Luis Obispo County coastal communities. Head south and you're back toward Santa Barbara County and the rest of the 805.

For anyone planning an 805 road trip, Pismo Beach makes a natural stop between the Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo County portions of the region.

Our Pismo Beach Tips

Give yourself more time than you think you'll need. It's easy to underestimate how much time you'll spend simply walking the beach, exploring the pier or stopping at one of the coastal parks.

Plan ahead if you're visiting on a summer weekend, holiday or other busy travel period. Parking, hotels and campgrounds can fill up.

Bring a jacket even if the weather looks warm. Coastal weather can change quickly.

Check the tides if tide pooling is on your list, and always be cautious around rocks and waves.

If you're visiting the Monarch Butterfly Grove, remember that the butterflies are seasonal and their numbers can change from year to year. Stay on designated paths and give the butterflies plenty of space.
