San Luis Obispo County News

Local, regional, and statewide news continually updated from thousands of sources on the web.
  • J.H., Petitioner, v. The SUPERIOR COURT of San Luis Obispo County, Respondent; San Luis Obispo County Department of Social Services, Real Party in Interest.

  • I wish San Luis Obispo County Supervisor Adam Hill the very best, and I hope he is sincere in his admissions of aberrance and promises to seek help and regain our respect, but I remain skeptical. Efforts to recall Supervisor Hill will remain on hold until we can determine whether or not he actually is sincere.

  • San Luis Obispo County's Superior Court Judges have finally answered a question I've long pondered. Why were so many lawyers the driving force behind the American Revolution? John and Samuel Adams, Alexander Hamilton, Thomas Jefferson, Patrick Henry, Richard Henry Lee, Edward Rutledge, William and Robert Livingston, John Jay, and many more led their neighbors to fight for self-government.

  • San Luis Obispo County has agreed to pay $9.95 million to a Los Osos Wastewater Project contractor who filed a law suit demanding payment for uncompensated construction work. The settlement agreement is slated to go before the SLO County Board of Supervisors for final approval on Tuesday.

  • The Tribune's coverage of San Luis Obispo County Supervisor Adam Hill's recent obscene outburst against a constituent, and Hill's reaction that he will be getting help for depression, were both welcome news. For the Tribune -Hill's primary public enabler-to ask him to get help or resign was remarkable.

  • Canine influenza, or dog flu, is a highly contagious virus that is garnering more attention in the news lately with a recent outbreak in the San Francisco Bay area, the Santa Barbara County Public Health Department reports. According to Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine, there have been 72 reports of canine flu in California in the past 1.5 months.

  • The family of the Atascadero man who died in San Luis Obispo County Jail after being strapped in a restraint chair for more than 46 hours has contributed $25,000 to the challenger in the county sheriff race and another $25,000 to the candidate attempting to unseat the county's district attorney. Andrew Holland, a mentally ill man, died in January 2017 at the age of 36 after jail guards left him strapped in the restraint chair, also known as the "Devil's Chair."

  • Golden State Water Co. customers packed Shepard Hall at the Santa Maria Public Library Tuesday night to voice their collective dismay with a proposal to raise their rates by nearly 20 percent starting next year.

  • The San Luis Obispo County Board of Supervisors decided Tuesday not to support a Surfrider Foundation's resolution against offshore oil because it appeared redundant, unverified and without teeth. On Monday at about 4:30 p.m., a member of the Surfrider Foundation, Charles Varni, sent a copy of their referendum to the board seeking support.

  • A state lawmaker and reform groups are pushing to bar officers from carrying pepper spray in juvenile jails in California, one of six states that still allow employees to patrol with the caustic chemicals in youth detention facilities. Their calls come as the Board of State and Community Corrections prepares to consider regulatory changes Thursday that would limit using pepper spray to times when there is an imminent threat and would require officers to document its use.

  • The San Luis Obispo County Board of Supervisor voted 4-0 Tuesday to bring back options for curtailing Supervisor Adam Hill's threats and abuses against constituents. Hill was absent from the meeting.

  • The San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's Office has identified the body found floating in the water at Port San Luis on Jan. 31 as 40-year-old James Ross Calder of Avila Beach. [Cal Coast Times] Neighbors reported Calder missing on Jan. 21 after noticing his dog had been left outside.

  • Retired San Luis Obispo police officer and long time private investigator Greg Clayton announced Friday that he is running against San Luis Obispo County Sheriff Ian Parkinson for the county's top law enforcement seat. [Cal Coast Times] Following the death of Andrew Holland, a mentally ill Atascadero man who died after being strapped in a restraint chair for more than 46 hours, the Holland family asked Parkinson to step down.

  • One of the most iconic road trip routes in the USA may very well be down California's Highway 1 that hugs the rocky Pacific coastline and passes through some of the state's most popular destinations. About two and a half hours from the buzz of San Francisco is the slower pace of Monterey County and its rugged coastline, quiet coastal villages and pristine state parks.

  • TAMC contracted for the RideAmigos platform last year and the first orientation for the beta test period was held at the TAMC office on Monday. A rideshare/carpool program was launched Monday for Monterey County commuters, with an orientation to the beta test first year period.
